Bed Bug Treatments

bed bugs treatment

Bed bugs can be present in our households for weeks and months before we even notice them. In most cases the first sign is when you spot a bed bug bite. For some reason the reaction to a bite sometimes is delayed for a week or so, and by that time most people have no idea of the bed bugs’ presence.

It is important to mention that bed bugs do not distinguish one’s social status, nor the cleanliness of one’s household. They may infest the most luxurious hotel, multimillion-dollar villas, as well as a homeless person’s shack.

Symptoms

If you wake up with bites that you hadn’t had before you went to bed, you might suspect the occurrence of bed bugs. First of all, you need to identify the bug itself to exclude other possible origins for the bites (from a mosquito, fly, ant, or spider). Inspect the bites closely - bed bug bites cause itchy welts that appear in a zigzag pattern or in a line. There are often observed clusters of bites where each cluster usually contains three to five bites.

Bed Bug Hunt

Bed bugs often are not discovered until their population has grown. They are hiding in tiny places, not only in the mattress, in cracks and crevices of the bed, and in nearby furniture, but also behind the baseboards, under the carpet edging, and even in the walls. You should also inspect around the electrical outlets, heating vents, picture/poster frames, etc. A good trick is to use adhesive traps or double-sided carpet tape near the bed to capture the bed bugs.

You can be 100% sure of the bite origin at the moment you find the bug, an egg, or the shed skin. The extermination part can then begin.

Treatments

Vacuum and steam clean the whole bed, including the mattresses and the adjacent furniture. If you find a bed bug nest (usually characterized by a lot of cast skins nearby and possibly by the presence of eggs), apply the same steps. Install bed bug interceptors under the feet of the bed frame to keep bed bugs off your bed while you are sleeping. The bed linen should be washed in hot water for 30 minutes. Also it is essential to use a dryer; about 115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit will kill all life stages of bed bugs. Encase the mattress and box spring in a special impermeable mattress cover to prevent it from new infestation and to prevent any new bites in case there are any bugs left in it. After a few months without food, the bed bugs die. In colder climates it may, however, take up to one year.  Sometimes it may be necessary to discard infested mattresses and furniture. Getting completely rid of these bugs usually requires chemical treatments. Because treating your bed and bedroom with insecticides can be harmful, it is important to use products that can be used safely in bedrooms.

It can take several treatments to completely eliminate bed bugs. It all depends on the type of treatment chosen and on the vastness of the infestation. It is essential to seek professional pest control to address the infestation.
