Pound Puppies

August 07, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

Choosing your puppy from the pound or local animal shelter is the ultimate lesson in love and responsible pet ownership.
Your local animal shelter is a perfect place for families on a budget as adoption fees are generally $50-$100 for dogs and $40-$85 for cats. This is extremely affordable as it usually includes pet micro-chip, tattoo, rabies vaccinations and more. What better way to teach the value of life and saving stray dogs from euthanasia than having your family fall in love with a dog at the pound. And you know what they say about picking a pound puppy?  “Let him pick you!”

Other benefits of adopting pound puppies are advances in house-training and socialization. Generally the pet will be full-grown by this time it reaches a pound so size won’t be a surprise.  Also, on the information sheet attached to the dog’s file will be the answers to all the questions you may have about the dog including breed, age, health problems or lack there of and his observed behavior by the staff with other dogs, children and adults. You can visit the pound with your family many times to learn whether you want to choose a puppy, a 1-year-old or a mature dog, a large breed or small.  The Humane Society of the United States estimates that about 25% of American shelter dogs are pure-bred so you can research the breed of puppies they have available to see if it’s right for your family. You should also get some books all about the benefits of loving a mutt, which can be the greatest dog of all.

On the downside of adopting a pound puppy, generally, nobody knows why the animal has been abandoned. It could be abuse, laziness, neglect or that he displays health concerns or loud, destructive, fearful aggressive behavior. This could be the case with the pet you’re deciding to take home so make sure everyone in the family agrees on being patient as you socialize him into your family.  Many times, a shelter dog or cat just needs love and they fit right in to your family with the strong bond created by you saving his life!
